One of the biggest forces making constructive gains in Second Life is education. I've heard that over 60 universities have virtual campuses within the virtual world. This use gives online learning a whole new meaning; the internet classroom is a literal as will as a virtual reality.

I think one of the great shames of our era is that we have not done more to bring this sort of technology into classrooms. We have a generation of kids that are quite comfortable with digital gaming and yet we don't extend them this possible learning opportunity? One of the great objections is financial; this sort of learning requires computer hardware and bandwidth intensive infrastructure. The fact is that the costs of this technology drop almost daily. The other more important consideration is if we can afford not to use this technology? I think one of the things that will eventually define our future is our ability to teach in the current day. I found both of these news stories on Linden Labs and 'Second Life' this last week.
The answer to these questions are simple; people are still usng Second Life and it is growing. As a privately held company it is difficult to establish the exact value of Linden Labs and Second Life but there are significant numbers showing both growth and profit.

You can certainly play games within the virtual world. This is really an example of what social networking technology could evolve into. Now it looks like Linden Labs is working to integrate other social networking technologies into their platform. My opinion is this is a good strategic decision for them.
Older news story on Second Life. Some of the problems they talk about here are being confronted by Linden Labs right now. I am personally not completely comfortable with some of the potential aspects of censorship that these present.
