Romanian police blame ghosts for a vandalism spree! The police even end up calling in a priest to perform an exorcism! It really doesn't get a lot better than this. 2月27日 Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News
Celebrity Ghost Sightings
The entertainment industry has done a lot of good and bad for paranormal research. They have exploited many of the legends ruthlessly. It is sort of interesting to find out that a few performers have had some experiences of their own. 2月26日 Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News

Every morning one of my first rituals of the day is to check the news online. It always warms my heart to see my favorite plumbers making it into the news somewhere. This particular news story is actually about the investigative efforts of another group but the location being investigated had been previously investigated by Jason and Grant! 2月24日 Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News

Here is another example of what I call 'ghost tourism'; the effort to turn a haunting into a local resource. I am particularly careful in my evaluation of such alleged paranormal phenomena. It always strikes me as odd when such a place hesitates to allow formal investigation. Now I'm not saying that these people are declining a formal investigation. The article actually says they have four 'ghost hunters' of their own looking into the local legend. The thing is I have found locations that don't want any kind of investigation. Sometimes they say it is because they don't want to "disturb the spirits". I think it has more to do with the fact that they don't want anybody to cast a shadow of doubt over their alleged phenomena. Not good for tourism.
Here is a simple fact; you can not prove something doesn't exist. You can prove that specific alleged manifestations are actually caused by some not so dramatic natural events. This is to say that the bangings in the night might just be the house shifting as the temperature changes. The ghostly shadows could just be the mind matrixing the natural shadows of a dim room. The important thing is you can not prove something absolutely doesn't exist!
So why do some get cold feet at the idea of somebody or some group doing a formal investigation? Sometimes I think it has a lot to do with their perception of the people who want to investigate. Some of those interested in the paranormal don't project the best images. There is a lot to be said for having a credible image. Sometimes I think the alleged haunted location wants the romantic image of their status preserved. Sometimes critical analysis does nothing for the life of a legend. 2月23日 Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News

Speaking with the Dead
This is classic. I have missed feelings about a lot of psychics and other "spiritualists". There has been a lot of fraud in this area over the last couple hundred years. There are some people who believe it is all fraud. I am not going to make that kind of judgement about it. I think that each and every psychic should be judged on the basis of a person's experience with them. I have seen and read about some who seem to be quite real in terms of their alleged abilities. I have also seen some who could be emotionally unstable. This little MSNBC online story throws a bit of light on the whole thing. I'll leave final judgement up to others. 2月22日 Why will we have to leave Minnesota someday? Why will we have to leave Minnesota someday?
Today Tim Pawlenty did a good thing. The problem is that I think his veto is going to end up being a symbolic gesture as our state legislature starts increasing our taxes. The DFL party only has to sway one Republican vote to get the veto overturned. I agree that Minnesota's infrastructure is in need of help. We have spent too much money on light rail and not enough money on the roads and bridges we rely on.
The problem is this; they intend to raise our taxes in order to do this. They have no intention of taking money away from less critical areas. They want to take more money out of our pockets. Allegedly we are in a recession and they want to take more money away from us. Our state is already helping fund a misguided effort at energy independence in the form of ethanol. This is now pushing up food prices and having other detrimental effects on our state economy. We are just pouring more money into an educational system with the thought that we can spend our way to higher graduation rates and students better prepared for the future. The state legislature and senate just can not see that some things might have to take a backseat while more critical things are fixed. They really want to have us all march in unison down a path to fiscal destruction.
This is all folly.
Laurie and I are already planning for our eventual retirement. We might be lucky. Our retirement is based around a pension plan and not the sort of 401K disaster so many companies have. If we retire in Minnesota we face losing almost half of our pension to state taxes! Yet the state wants to tax us more.
Maybe when the time comes we will just sell our Minnesota home and move somewhere else. That will be less tax money for Minnesota to collect. It might well be the only way we can retire. Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News
Are Ghosts only in the Mind?
Science seems to particularly have a hard time with the unexplainable. I really like the idea that scientists try to understand the phenomena and this explanation for some apparition phenomena does seem plausible to me. I have to wonder about all the other odd evidence that is out there; EVP's, apparitions that don't take place under low-light conditions, unexplainable communications. I will gladly accept the fact that a lot of people can misinterpret things in the dark. I just have a hard time with believing that the whole phenomena can be so easily brushed off.

This is interesting in that the witness not only saw an alleged ghost but got video of it. The account sounds fairly credible and I will be delighted to see this video if it makes it out publicly.

I love this story. Now this might not be a ghost; maybe we have a zombie? Not sure what they found but it was interesting that they called in a 'ghost hunter' to investigate the mysterious events. I Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News

You have to hand it to the Russians; their scientists now believe they have managed to make a communications bridge to the other side. The english translation of this news story out of Pravda is a bit rough but I think you can get the idea. 2月19日 Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News

I almost got excited when I first heard about this news story. Then I saw the video and most of the alleged evidence of the paranormal is orb photos. I don't put a lot of credence in orb photos; these are as likely to be dust in the air as a roaming spirit. 2月16日 Ghosts in the NewsGhost in the News

Vermont Ghost Hunters
This is a particularly interesting news article in that it covers one of the ghost legends the group is investigating as well as the group itself. The article is also sympathetic to some of the issues faced by people interested and active in exploring the phenomena. I am seeing a greater public acceptance for this sort of paranormal research all the time. The sad fact is that the interest in this also draws some people who border on the 'lunatic fringe'. Sometimes they don't just border on it, sometimes they dive in whole-heartedly. I'm also finding a few groups that remind me more of flim-flam artists. I imagine that fraud artists find a haven in literally any interest. This group in Vermont sounds credible and good though. It is good to see a relatively positive article in the news about this sort of thing. 2月15日 Ghosts at the Tower of LondonGhosts at the Tower of London
The Tower of London is allegedly one of the most haunted sites in the world. This article from the Miami Herald is particularly interesting in that the writer shows a noble interest in both the history and the paranormal. Very often I encounter people either interested in one or the other but not both. I consider it a potential failing of a lot of paranormal researchers in that they don't appreciate the history associated with a particular location or individual. 2月13日 Ghosts in the News!Cheesehead Ghosthunters!

I shouldn't pick on Wisconsin; there are some very good paranormal research groups over there. I don't know much about this one but they might be worth contacting. Just another example of these groups coming out in the news more and more often. Interesting Review of 'Ghost Hunters'Interesting Review of 'Ghost Hunters'
This newspaper review of the 'Ghost Hunters' television series struck me as interesting. The series has actually been on the air for quite awhile. The thing is that it also seems to be attracting more viewers as of late. Now the funny thing about this review is that it wanders off in discussing a possible UFO report. Personally I think UFO's and Ghosts are two entirely different phenomena. I've listened to Jason and Grant of the 'Ghost Hunters' series on their syndicated radio talkshow 'Beyond Reality' and they will quite often have UFO stuff on their show. The thing is they also make the distinction that hauntings and UFO's are two entirely different things. I think I'll stick to the ghosts and leave the UFO stuff to groups like MUFON. This particular story is interesting in that one of the paranormal investigators also happens to be a police officer. It seems to me like more and more people are taking a more than casual interest in parapsychology all the time. 2月12日 Ghosts in the News!Ghosts in the News!
Middleboro Town Hall
I find it interesting how more and more often paranormal investigators are being called in to check out any reports of strange activity. It seems to me that the belief in ghosts is becoming more socially acceptable. Of course I did read recently, somewhere, that close to a third of Americans believe in ghosts. |
