6月29日 Who do I want for president?Who do I want for president?
I get that question a lot lately. Sometimes it just makes me wonder about the person asking the question. Why should my opinion matter? Still, the question remains and I'll tell you the truth; I don't like McCain or Obama. I've read a lot about their platforms and, quite frankly, I don't believe either of them offer any hope. Neither of them offer plans I consider realistic to face the problems that are facing this country.
At this point my biggest concern is being able to survive what ever either of them brings... 6月28日 Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News

Ghost hunters claim Civil War fort is haunted
This isn't the first news story I've found about this. It looks like TAPS seems to have found some shocking new bit of information. I'm not picking on TAPS; they do what they do better than most other groups I've seen. The fact is most people seem pretty ignorant of the amount of paranormal activity that exists around Civil War era sites. It seems to be particularly true of fortifications. To my knowledge Fort Delaware saw no combat but was a pretty dismal prisoner of war camp. Just do a little historical research on the mortality rates among POW populations during the war and you see plenty of potential background for a haunting.
Now look at some of the permanent and semi-permanent fortifications from the war that did see combat. Some places like the seacoast fortifications outside of Mobile Bay or the field works around Petersburg Virginia have a lot of legendary hauntings associated with them. These places would warrant a lot further investigation but most of them are under control of the National Park Service. The NPS is not always the most open-minded about this sort of thing.

Deadwood Tobacco CompanyDeadwood Tobacco Company
I've written about these people and their fine establishment before. I didn't have time on that visit to Deadwood to really enjoy their place. This time Laurie and I decided to make Deadwood Tobacco Company our relaxation place of choice. It has only been in the last few months that I've given in to my taste for a good cigar and the humidor there was just sort of beckoning me to check it out.
I'll tell you right now, if you are trying to relax after a day of seeking out historical mysteries this is probably the place! The staff is friendly and mellow. They also know their tobacco and beer! The music in the evenings is simply awesome. They get some amazing talent down there! This is just the place to have a cold one and a good cigar. It looked to me like they carried the whole line of CAO MX2 that I prefer. They also have some of the coolest Deadwood souvenirs I've seen! One of my personal pride possessions now is my Deadwood Tobacco Humidor.
Here is a link to their website. If you can't get out to Deadwood to check the place out than you can at least check their website. This is a lot more than an online catalog for the store! Look through it and you might start to get a feel for DTC.
Check out one of their ads!

They only give a single line mention about ghosts in this article. Still if makes me wonder if since the TAPS investigations in the area a year or so ago the hauntings in the area have become a tourism selling point. I have to admit that Laurie and I are a lot more interested in visting a location if there is reported paranormal activity there. Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News
Ghost hunting with Wednesday 13!

I love entertainment news sites for ghost news. They don't have image concerns about reporting the paranormal. It currently even seems to be 'cool' to for a celebrity to report seeing ghosts. 6月18日 Home again...Home again...
Laurie and I got home at about 10:00pm tonight. I usually try to do an update on the blog right before we leave Deadwood and another in Sioux Falls but this time it couldn't happen. Our Wi-fi access in the Bullock was very unstable during most of the stay. This is really unusual because we generally have access to at least three different networks! I was really thinking something was wrong with my laptop for awhile but other people in the hotel seemed to be having the same problem.
I do have some thoughts from the trip. I was concerned and interested in seeing what the higher gas prices would do to business in Deadwood? Quite a few people told me it was slower this year but they also said there were a lot more foreign tourists showing up. I would guess the weaker dollar just means more opportunity for tourists from outside the country to come over. I also heard a couple bikers talking about how the high gas prices would be good for the Sturgis rally; less of the 'Winnebago Bikers', more of the real bikers. At least that was their thoughts on it.
Yup, I got my Deadwood Tobacco Humidor and we are safely home... 6月16日 Ghosts in the NewsGhosts in the News

6月15日 The Gordon StockadeThe Gordon Stockade
The Gordon Stockade located in Custer State Park is one of the many interesting episodes from the early history of the Black Hills. Laurie and I got a chance to visit it yesterday while we wandered around the park. To my knowledge it was the only formal fortification to be built in the Black Hills. It was constructed by the Gordon party while they somewhat illegally prospected. Their efforts were entirely in violation of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty but efforts such as this were almost inevitable in 1874. The United States had gone through a financial panic in 1873 and the rumor of gold in the hills would be largely substantiated by the 1874 Custer Expedition. Desperation can breed some phenomenal efforts.
In some ways the Gordon party might have been lucky. The army discovered their fort and evicted them from the hills. I often wonder how many other such efforts took place and the people involved didn't make it out of the hills. They had good reason to build their fort. The Lakota made it well known that they would kill anybody they found violating their sacred grounds. The army was actually pretty impressed with this fort when they found it. One officer commented that it could withstand just about anything outside of artillery fire.
The thing is the Lakota knew how to deal with fortifications; they just cut them off from outside supply and would try starving them out. I don't know if the fort had a well - there is a substantial amount of water nearby - but I can't imagine an isolated group of prospectors holding out here long.
The current day stockade is actually the second reconstruction of the original fort. There are three cabins inside that are fenced off and marked as historic structures. Both Laurie and I were not aware of any part of the original structure surviving. It is still a very interesting monument to the determination of these early prospectors.
6月14日 Deadwood and Wild Bill DaysDeadwood and Wild Bill Days
Laurie and I made it into Deadwood at about 2:30pm and got our room at about 3:00pm. This is the annual 'Wild Bill Days' celebration. It is sort of a massive party in honor of the Wild Bill Hickock. Now Wild Bill wasn't in this place more than three weeks before Jack McCall put a bullet in his head. Still the town thinks of Wild Bill as their most famous resident.
They have relaxed the open container ordinance for the celebration and blocked off Main Street for a party. There is a large stage set up in the street right in front of the Bullock. The streets are already filled with a combination of bikers, tourists and some inebriates. I have my box of CAO cigars and will probably do my own little part toward the festivities. Heck, both Laurie and I are dead tired but we have enough energy left for this...
Sioux Falls Flying J at 4:00amSioux Falls 'Flying J' at 4:00am
Laurie and I made the first leg of our trip to the Black Hills. Not one exciting thing to report; just the mandatory stop at 'Flying J' for gasoline and caffeine. Gas prices are lower here than in Minnesota but we also know that the next gas stop will probably be in Wall. The prices in Wall seem inevitably higher than anywhere else along I-90. The weather has been very good and everything is working out just about perfectly. |
