I'm very fond of librarians. 7月30日 The Cyber Way to KnowledgeThe Cyber Way to Knowledge
I have a stack of books next to me that I need to read. One of the few benefits of my being trapped at home is that I've had a chance to catch up on some of this reading. Now I've found a new book that I need to get and put at the top of my reading pile.
Liberating Learning
by Terry M. Moe and John E. Chubb
ISBN 978-0-470-44214-2
I found a review of this book in the Wall Street Journal. The authors are putting forward the idea that we should use the new online technologies to try to bring about an educational revolution in the United States. If they have their facts straight the biggest roadblock to doing this is the Teachers Unions and their powerful political lobbies. When you consider that President Obama is moving to make broadband access universally available it only seems like a good way to justify the money going into this costly infrastructure construction. The Teachers Unions were heavily behind the President's 2008 campaign so they should happily endorse this kind of change. These same teachers would need to adapt to this change in education; traditional classroom teaching would have to give way to more tech savvy methods.
How To Use Virtual Worlds for BusinessHow To Use Virtual Worlds for Business
I have a feeling articles like this are going to be more and more common. Some companies are finally 'getting it' and starting to use this technology constructively.
Virtual reality – a new world awaits...
Even the most draconian, freedom crushing, free speach killing state on Earth is getting it! I imagine it won't be that long and I'll have avatars waving Chairman Mao's Little Red Book running amok in Second Life. It'll be interesting to see how groups like the Second Life Liberation Army deal with them...
7月29日 Virtual worlds are getting a second lifeVirtual worlds are getting a second life
I found the rather optimistic report on the growth of virtual worlds from a newspaper in the UK. Their facts are essentially correct. I have a feeling other main stream media will soon also be paying attention to this technology again.
Second Life 101: gateway communities and renting
Another fine article for beginners from Apollo Manga. The whole idea of gateway communities is important in that these are the locations where new residents can learn the skills they need to succeed in Second Life.
Somebody recently asked me if Linden Labs supplied a client program for Macs. To tell you the truth I haven't looked lately but I did find this video about the Apple store in Second Life.
Second Life 101: getting startedSecond Life 101: getting started
This seems like an incredibly useful article by Second Life resident Apollo Manga. Probably the greatest dropout rate for people first entering this virtual world is the initial week or so. This article goes a long way towards making the process both easier and more enjoyable.
Now for a little Second Life humor...
Is 'Augmented Reality' the Next Big Thing? Is 'Augmented Reality' the Next Big Thing?
This 2007 report gives a fairly good explanation of 'augmented reality'. Now they predict in here that this technology will be pervasive by 2008 and this is obviously not the case. I would like to note here that its sort of foolish to try to establish specifc dates when any technology will take off. On the other hand it does look like augmented reality is beginning to find a place in 2009.
This is a more current video on General Electrics use of the technology.
Nissan is using Augmented Reality in their marketing.
Technologies often converge as they find their place in society. This then makes me wonder how the virtual reality technology of Augmented Reality might someday further enhance the immersive experience of people using Virtual Worlds?

The Second Life Taser Collar - probably not what Taser intended.
The legal implications of virtual world technologies are simply amazing. We already know the IRS is trying to figure out a way to tax all those Lindens locked up in Second Life. Now the lawyers are looking quite seriously at how copyright protection works there.

The Federation of American Scientists and Second Life
The technology around virtual worlds is evolving incredibly fast. The convergence of widely available broadband, affordable computer video graphics and open source client software is creating a revolution of sorts. You can already see how Second Life has entered the Real World areas of politics, business and education. Now we are seeing a new group enter the virtual world with their own ideas.
The Federation of American Scientists is working on creating a platform technology that would allow somebody using Second Life - or other virtual worlds - to access a wide range of digital information external to the virtual environment. This is essentially allowing researchers to access and use data in ways never dreamed of before. In theory you could enter the virtual representation of a Real World library and access the digital information of that library as easily as pulling a book off the shelf. It would be possible for people across the globe to gather within the virtual world to discuss their work without the costs and risks of travel.

The amount of Real World political activity inside Second Life is amazing.
It is interesting that the parties that seem to grasp the power of the internet are also the parties in power.

My doctor has given me instructions to stay at home for the next week. I'm not any sort of medical expert but this is roughly how it was explained to me. There are some blood clots in my left leg, if one of them was to come loose it could potentially travel to my heart and cause a lot of damage. Since my heart is already damaged from other things this could only compound things further. The same travelling clot could also damage my lungs or even move to my brain and cause a stroke. No matter how you see it the end result it not good.
On the other hand I was stumbling around work with this pain in my leg for over a week before I saw my doctor. I was just lucky that Laurie insisted I see my doctor. The odds are good that the clots are not going to move with moderate activity. If they had been moved by such activity I would probably already be dead. This does mean that I don't take any risks; I'm supposed to stay home and avoid take it easy. I am also shooting myself up twice a day with a drug called Lovenox and taking Coumadin again. Interesting drug that Coumadin is, derived from the rat poison Warfarin.
So here I am with my nifty new laptop - probably the most amazing computer I've ever owned - and my usually reliable Qwest DSL. Do you think i'm going to let this time go to waste? I can still think and type. I'll probably be posting even more on the blog. If I don't do something constructive with this time I'm going to just go quietly insane... 7月24日 Second Life Land Exchange Deadline LoomsSecond Life Land Exchange Deadline Looms
This is about the biggest thing happening in Second Life. Opinions about it run all over the spectrum; some people think its some sort of necessary evil, some see it as censorship. Personally I don't like censorship in any form. Now the rule of unintended consequences comes into play. What will be the final result of this effort in forced mass migration?
Opinions vary...

I've found another University established on Second Life. Quite often these are not frivilous little efforts either. There are whole campuses within the virtual world! I am increasingly convinced future generations will turn to virtual reality as a easier, safer means of getting an education. The arts community thrives within Second Life. When you consider that by Linden Labs estimates 97% of the content within this virtual world is generated by the users then it only stands to reason creative people might show up. I never cease to be amazed by what I find. Some people worry that digital technology is somehow hurting the arts community. The evidence I see in Second Life is that is enhancing the ability of artists to create and spread their work.

I hate being in the hospital. I had to check into the hospital late yesterday. Scary situation. I'm not going to dwell on it; the details are irrelevant.
