8月31日 The DominionThe Dominion
I earnestly try to be fair and inclusive in what I cover about Second Life and virtual world technology. The fact is there are a lot of different people finding use for it. It wouldn't be honest to not include what some would consider some of the alternative communities that are there.
Let me introduce 'The Dominion'...
Texas A&M Opens Second Life CampusTexas A&M Opens Second Life Campus
Another schools sets up shop in the virtual world. Probably the single biggest growth area in Second Life is education; it is my understanding that over 130 colleges and universities are there now. It makes me wonder if their students will graduate not only with degress but an appreciation of this technology. Will this knowledge then be translated into even more Real World applications?

I have some serious concerns about this bill. I'll be perfectly honest; I don't always trust our government to do the right thing. I do see a need for increasing cyber-security. Our national economy is increasingly dependent on the internet. I am amazed at how in a few short years so much of our telecommunications has been migrated over to one form of IP or another. We need to protect these assets. The question is how far do we let these same efforts compromise our personal liberty?
I think one of the best tools in cybersecurity is not some questionable federal authority. We will ultimately be better off with more attention being paid to how we secure our corporate and personal networks. You can call me paranoid but I don't like the questionable extent to which this bill allows government to intrude in or take over our online lives.
I don't know which scares me more, the potential of cyber terrorism or this sort of thinking from our politicians? When you consider how critical the internet has become to free speech what risks does this sort of power represent to freedom? Grant this power to the wrong people and you're giving them one more tool to silence dissent with. It sounds like the Mullahs are having a heck of time trying to keep track of their revolutionaries within the virtual world. The embattled Iranian leadership might be able to silence the opposition in the real world but they are not so able in cyberspace. There are some people who will question the value of avatars in struggle involving real world bloodshed. Revolutions are as much about ideas as guns; the internet might be the battleground of such ideas. Introducing the LLMedia APIWatch and learn; Linden Labs is working to make Second Life an increasingly viable business platform. This article doesn't explain enough that some of the first constructive efforts in Virtual Reality by the Navy took place in Second Life. Speed Matters Laurie and I are members of Communications Workers of America 7200. I don't always agree with the political positions of the CWA. We are still a free country and this is my right. I do agree with their position on the expansion of broadband within the United States. The problem has alway been how this is done and who picks up the bill? The video above is aging but still true. It might even be more relevant today than it was in 2008; broadband could potentially be a tangible economic stimulus in the form of providing the infrastructure for new technologies. This could all translate to new jobs.

Another news story of somebody figuring out the financial potential within the virtual world. It doesn't take a lot of searching online to find articles posted about two years ago predicting the death of Second Life. These articles all point out the migration of business out of the world. Now it seems that a lot of this exodus has reversed; companies are returning. Use of Second Life reaching fever pitchUse of Second Life reaching fever pitch

This is a fascinating article that details some of the efforts Linden Labs is taking to merge their technology into the Enterprise structures of business customers. This is one of the most detailed reports I've found on this from a third party source. Linden Labs is aggressively moving to provide a useful platform available to business.

Some very special friends of mine told me about this song. I think 'The Guild' is involved in some lame virtual game-world called World of Warcraft. Now give Second Life a chance with their song... Big Carriers Won't Bite on Fed-Funded BroadbandBig Carriers Won't Bite on Fed-Funded Broadband
It looks like the Obama Broadband Stimulus Plan is not doing to well with the major telecommunications companies. Most of the major telcos don't want to expand into what are termed as low density areas. They can't find enough customers in these generally rural areas to justify their interest. The other thing is I don't think that four billion dollars even begins to cover the infrastructure costs of such a move into these areas.
Now could this same money help the small rural telcos? These are the companies that generally bought these rural exchanges as the major telcos discarded them. They might be interested in the money. They would also have to accept some government supervision. The idea of the FCC camped out in their corporate offices might not sit to well. 8月23日 Bye bye beta! AvaLine: Dial an Avatar is now available to all avatars I wonder how many telecommunications companies will be smart enough to see what it happening here? Second Life already moves over 15 billion minutes of VOIP a year. The number of minutes is climbing. Now they are making it possible for real world communications to extend into the virtual environment; the implications for business conferencing shouldn't be hard to see. This technology is very rapidly maturing as it converges with other digital applications. Right now some people are beginning to wake up to what this all means. These people could very well decide our financial futures.
This interview was three months ago. The integration of external applications and technologies is becoming more apparent. The next time you pick up the phone it might be Bernard Broono calling...
